Are you excited for the 2008 Delaware State University Hornets basketball season? If so, that makes one of us. And not one of us as in you and me. One of us, as in, one of us members of the human race. Not even the school’s athletic department is excited, at least if their Web site is any indication. I went there to check out the team’s schedule, and the site appears to have been created using a Tandy and a stack of punch cards. Have a look:

It really pleases the eye, doesn’t it? It’s very sleek. Very sophisticated. Very now. None of those links seem to work, but hey, at least they are Useful Links. And three cheers for getting the 2006-2007 team preview up. Every Web site is going to look like this after The End Times.
Anyway, Delaware State is 2-10. They’ve lost to Longwood and some school called Cheyney. My keen sports insight tells me they are not a very good basketball team. But I think they should still be applauded. Why? Because they’re gamely filling the role of early-season cannon fodder for the big schools. They’ve already faced UConn, Kentucky, Ohio State, and West Virginia. And they play Maryland tomorrow night. I feel bad for these teams…they’re so faceless to the big programs and yet so essential for padding their records. All the big schools should get together at the end of the season and have some kind of ceremony for these teams, who have sacrificed so much for so little recognition. They should erect a Tomb of the Unknown Mid-Major. It would only be fitting.
In the meantime, Delaware State should change their mascot. I have a few suggestions.
