Oh yeah, I remember Watkins. Would you believe I actually played drinking games one night with him and Terrell Stokes? Lots of mediocrity in the house that night.

I had forgotten about Walker though. I thought about Fofana but figured he didn’t have enough at-bats, if you will, to qualify. Those are better stats than I would have guessed for Garrison, although until you can measure cowardice and apathy with stats, his true suckitude will never be fully evident that way in my opinion. But maybe I’ll bump him down below Mardesich, with Bowers still at the top and then Dupree. My guess for next bad Maryland big man: Mr. Steve Goins.

Mardesich was an OK role player off the bench for 4 years. His numbers were lousy, but he played defense and blocked shots. Mardesich’s numbers actually got worse season after season though, so he’s a contestant in this discussion, but I don’t put him so close to the bottom.

Bowers was basically the same guy as Mardesich, only with worse stats. He started the final 10 games of his sophomore year due to Ibekwe’s late-season slump, but he never really developed any talents other than being tall. If you’re 7′1″, you should be able to pull down more than 1.8 rebounds a game regardless of how many minutes you get. He’s a strong candidate.

Garrison never lived up to his High School All-American expectations, but he was good enough to start 70 games. 7.5 points, 5 rebounds per game for his career, and his best season was as a Junior when he got over 10 points and 6 boards per game. I take him out of the running.

So who else in recent memory?

A few years ago, Hassan Fofana transferred 4 games into his sophomore season at Maryland. 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds in 7.9 minutes per game. He transferred to… Loyola! He had a pretty good career there and was a starter until getting injured his senior year.

Shane Walker also left after only one season last year. 0.5 points and 1.0 rebounds in 5.3 minutes per game. He transferred to… drum roll… Loyola! He had to sit out last season after transferring, so the jury is still out on him.

Those two never really got the chance to earn minutes and prove themselves at Maryland. But Dupree was a starter 14 times in 2 seasons, he got his chance, and he went downhill, so Dupree is still a candidate.

I have one more strong contender for the title who was maybe before your time: Brian Watkins was a highly-touted transfer from Notre Dame who did basically nothing at Maryland in 3 seasons (1996-99). He scored 2.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 6.8 minutes per game for his career (plus only 10 career blocks for a 6′9″ guy). He was injured for most of his Junior season, and I remember him most for wearing really ugly sweaters on the bench during that time.
