Dr Stink

Can Erik Bakich be Maryland's Dr. Stink?

At the end of last year’s college baseball season, Maryland decided it needed a new direction and they hired coach Erik Bakich to rebuild the program.  At the time, Shell Games applauded the decision, if for no other reason than there was clearly a need for change.  As with any turnaround, the effects of this program’s efforts have not been immediately realized.  Maryland is currently 14-24 at about 2/3 through the regular season, and they are fighting to stay out of the basement of the ACC.  Just in case the Terps needed their morale stomped on a bit more, NC State capped off a sweep of the Terps this weekend with a 22-6 victory in College Park.

As Testudo Times points out, there is reason for hope.  The Terps have embarked on a campaign to keep local talent in Maryland.  According to UMTerps.com, UMD got the top two Maryland baseball players, infielder Kyle Convissar and catcher Alex Ramsay, to commit to playing in College Park next year.  Maryland also recruited heavily on the junior college circuit, which indicates that they should have some recruits that are immediately ready for prime time in 2010.  Also of note, the Terps signed pro coach Jim Leyland’s son Patrick, to be a catcher.  It’s never a bad thing to recruit a coach’s son, and hopefully it is just one more way that Maryland can get tied into the pro ranks.

The most crucial component to building a franchise is recruiting.  I’m not even going to call this a “re”building because Maryland baseball has been sub par for so long that Coach Bakich is really starting from scratch.  In my estimation, Bakich has done a good job of attracting talent that can have a near term impact on the team’s success.  As success breads success, look for the next step in the building process to be getting the team to play .500 ball next year.

The Freedom of the Press is a strong democratic lever in this country.  In case you had any doubts, witness the fact that the University of Maryland bowed to the pressure put on by this blog, Shell Games, regarding the mediocre state of the baseball team.  In the face of repeated criticism put on by Shell Games, Maryland took a dramatic step in resurrecting its baseball program by replacing Terry Rupp with newly minted head coach Erik Bakich.

My main criticism of the program was that it could not attract top talent despite the combination of a) being in the ACC, a top baseball conference, b) residing in a metro area that hosts two major league teams and a wealth of farm teams and developmental leagues, and c) having a fan base that will back a winner no matter what sport it is.  According to the Terps press release, Bakich was hired specifically for his proven recruiting abilities.  The press release stated that Bakich “[hauled] in top-25 classes all seven years in Nashville, including the top-ranked national class in 2005 and second-ranked national class in 2008.”

The release also stated that Bakich was on point for recruiting the 2002 Clemson team that went to the CWS championship game.  This guy is a proven winner.  It appears that Maryland is finally taking baseball seriously and I, for one, am excited about this move.  I can’t wait to see some real action at Shipley Field.  I’ve got a fever, and the the only thing that’s going to cool me down is some summertime Terrapin Baseball.

The power of the press is alive and well in America folks.  Shell Games spoke.  The University listened and reacted.  Need I say more?

the boys of spring

For the sixty-second straight year, the University of Maryland will not be represented at the College World Series.  Don’t look for them at the ACC Tournament, either.  During the time of year that I just start noticing that baseball is being played, the Terps are once again nowhere to be seen.  I would say that all hope is lost for a team when their school issues a news release getting excited about finishing .500 for the second year in a row.  Record-wise the Terps are playing at the Mendoza Line.  Mediocrity is not something we should be celebrating.

The team was outscored by almost a half a run per game.  Junior Scott Swinson, the team’s ace starter coming into 2009, seems to be getting progressively worse each year.  Swinson was 4-7 and had a 5.54 ERA this year after having a 3.97 ERA in 2007 and a 4.96 ERA in 2008.  Either opponents have figured Swinson out or he is not being developed properly, but this season did not yield progress for a kid that was touted as a potential pro.

On the bright side, the Terps did hit fairly well.  They should have 2B David Poutier and RF A.J. Casario back at the top of the line-up next year.  Both guys had solid years at the plate, and with another off-season they should be ready to lead this team in 2010.

The summer is long for a ballplayer when there are no games to be played.  The beautiful thing about baseball is that every spring each team gets to start fresh.  Maybe 2010 will be the year this team emerges and makes it into the ACC Tournament.
